The 2017 Ski Nationals in Canmore is the next big event for the AWCA’s younger athletes, and the team has been training hard at the Canmore Nordic Centre in the lead-up to the big event, March 18-25. Luke Gerwing, Thomas Manktelow and Delphine Duvernay-Tardiff are now on a steady diet of regimented training workouts in preparation for the event.
“We want them training at a steady pace; really organized training with a regular schedule. In winter, you end up being flexible with training because there are so many races. But these guys, we are starting them at 9 a.m. and getting them on a regular schedule of skiing and weights. We will get them in a fit, fit state and will start tuning them as the races get closer,” Perras said.
The young athletes survived a tough day of sub-max threshold testing on Monday (Feb. 17) and saw some big gains from the beginning of the year.
“They were looking over my shoulder to see their numbers.. it’s good to see them engaged and watching their training pay off.”
